Understanding the condition

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins develop when the one-way valves inside leg veins weaken and blood pools instead of returning to the heart. The veins enlarge, twist and become visible beneath the skin — and over time this venous reflux can progress to chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).

Left unmanaged, persistent reflux causes swelling, skin changes and, in advanced cases, venous ulcers. Compression therapy counteracts the pressure that drives this cycle, which is why it is recommended at every stage.

How compression helps

Restoring healthy venous return.

A graduated compression stocking is firmest at the ankle and eases gently up the leg. This pressure gradient narrows the vein diameter so the valves can close, accelerates upward blood flow, and reduces the swelling and discomfort of venous disease.

Supports the valves

Reduces vein diameter so weakened valves meet and close, limiting backward reflux.

Reduces swelling

Drives excess fluid out of the tissues and back into circulation, easing heaviness and oedema.

Protects the skin

Improves microcirculation to help prevent skin changes and venous ulcers over the long term.
